Doug McBeath began woodturning in 1998 as a 'retirement project' shortly after moving to Metchosin. Although he spent his career as a research scientist and director, he has worked with wood most of his life doing finish carpentry, cabinet and furniture making. He now spends much of his time turning at the lathe. Doug relies on local materials, native hardwoods - alder, big leaf maple, birch, and some with locally grown softwoods, such as fir, red and yellow cedar and yew when available, as well as ornamental trees and fruitwoods like apple, crabapple, pear, and plum - all provided by friends or sequestered from woodpiles. Doug began by turning bowls of various sizes, some utilitarian, others decorative. He branched out into lidded boxes, pens and pencils, pepper mills, goblets, vases and other hollow vessels, giving each piece of wood a new form that will display its unique pattern and beauty.
